Town was founded by Ed Schieffelin in 1879. It was one of the last frontier boomtowns of the west. It is best known for a famous gunfight at the Ok Corral.
Tombstone had a bowling alley, 4 churches, an icehouse, school, 2 banks, 3 newspapers, 110 saloons, 14 gambling halls.
The Earp brothers- Virgil, Wyatt, Morgan and Warren arrived in December 1879. They had ongoing conflicts with the local cowboys - Ike, Billy Clanton, Tom Mclaury, Frank. The Cowboys repeatedly threatened the Earps over many months until the conflict escalated into a shootout on October 26, 1881. famous gunfight is often portrayed as occurring at the Ok Corral, but the actual gunfight was on Fremont Street a block or two away.
